Bank Holiday showcase passes baton to next generation

If you joined the thousands of visitors to Trafford Palazzo over the bank holiday weekend, you will undoubtedly have experienced the local passion for sport and exercise, boosted by the region’s magnificent performance at the recent Olympic and Paralympic Games.

While local artist Myro Doodles captured the mood so emphatically with her incredible artwork, paying tribute to all the Olympic medallists returning to our region, it was perhaps the energy and excitement from our eye-catching athletic performances that really brought the centre to life.

Trafford Palazzo's vaulted open space provides the perfect ‘arena’ for such unique live performances. Over the coming months, we’re looking forward to welcoming an array of community groups and businesses from the local area, to showcase the very best talent our region has to offer.

More than 50,000 Bank Holiday visitors were treated to energetic live displays right across the weekend, from young members of the Manchester Academy of Gymnastics.

Maxine Grech founded the charity in 2017 to help local youngsters access high-quality, safe sporting facilities at an affordable rate for everyone. The club encourages children of all backgrounds and abilities to benefit from taking part in gymnastics, dance and boxing classes.

Gymnasts of all ages performed dazzling routines in front of our bustling bank holiday crowds, with live DJs performing in the background – creating a vibrant and energetic mood within the centre.

Maxine said: “After such a difficult 18 months for everyone, it was incredible for our youngsters to be performing in public again. Our gymnasts have experienced so much disruption throughout the pandemic, which we know has affected their confidence and performances."

“The engagement from everyone at Trafford Palazzo over the whole bank holiday weekend was brilliant. Some of our younger members were a bit nervous to start off with, but they grew in confidence with every round of applause and every kind word from passers-by."

“Sport can have such a positive impact on young people’s lives, teaching discipline, confidence and resilience – especially through performing in public. We’re so grateful to everyone at Trafford Palazzo for the wonderful reception they gave our young gymnasts and hope to be back at the centre soon!”

Next month, Trafford Palazzo will be hosting more family-friendly events to kick off the half-term holidays. Keep your eyes peeled here and on our social media channels for more event information.
